Performs the full range of technical inspections of commercial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable architectural and structural codes, ordinances and regulations; works with developers, contractors and homeowners to maintain code requirements and resolve problems relating to code compliance.
Three years of increasingly responsible structural building inspection experience or five years of journey-level experience in one or more of the building trades.
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Specialized training in the building trades or code enforcement is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Must possess one certification in any field listed below on the date of application. Continued employment requires the three certifications in the remaining fields be obtained within twelve months of the date of appointment.
Building: International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector, which requires successful completion of the residential and commercial building inspector examinations.
Electrical: Either of the following will fulfill the electrical certification requirement, provided it is based on the currently adopted National Electrical Code.
1. International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) Certified Electrical Inspector – Commercial.
2. International Code Council Commercial Electrical Inspector.
Plumbing: International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) Plumbing Inspector certification based on the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Mechanical: International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) Mechanical Inspector certification based on the Uniform Mechanical Code.
