The Planning and Building Department is currently recruiting to fill several Senior Specialty Combination Inspector positions. Under direction, Senior Specialty Combination Inspectors review plans, issue permits and perform complex combination inspections on new and existing residential structures and minor commercial buildings; perform specialty inspections on new and existing commercial and industrial buildings in one of the following areas: plumbing/mechanical, electrical or building; resolve complex issues using judgment and code discretion; provide lead direction to staff; and perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements include equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, 2 years of recent experience as a Specialty/Combination Inspector in the public sector, comparable to the City of Oakland, and knowledge of methods, materials and devices used in plumbing, electrical and mechanical installations and in building construction. Must have knowledge of standard building construction methods, Uniform Plumbing, Mechanical, Building, Swimming Pool/Spa/Hot Tub and National Electrical Codes and other related codes, regulations and ordinances enforceable by the City, and
have the ability to read and understand plans, diagrams, calculations and specifications and recommend alternate compliance methods. Also requires the ability to make recommendations for interpretations of applicable codes, regulations and ordinances, conduct inspections, analyze structures and plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems, identify violations of codes, regulations and specifications, and recognize nonconforming installations. Good problem solving, math, report generation, verbal/written communication, interpersonal, supervisory and training skills are necessary, as is the ability to use the automated permit management system and work in a complex and demanding environment with significant public interaction.
One certification as an Inspector related to assigned job functions from a nationally or state recognized agency (such as IAPMO or ICC or IAEI) must be obtained within 12 months of appointment to this position, unless the appointee is otherwise exempt based on California Building Standards Code 18949.28. The Senior Specialty Combination Inspector is required to maintain valid inspector certification throughout his or her employment with the City of Oakland. Failure to maintain this certificate may result in dismissal from employment.
Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
